So I painted it again! by rachelbcreative So I painted it again! by rachelbcreative
I've been looking to do a comparison on this, and looks like I found the right time!

Finished the remake [link] about August 22 of this year, just in time to put it up in my dorm room!
Finished the original [link] about a week before Christmas 2010. And might I say it...LOL! I definitely have made some improvement!!

How to Train Your Dragon in no way belongs to me -- the movie version is 100% (c) Dreamworks.

The part about the first one that I like is how Toothless' eyes are greener and they show up better against the dark. Other than that, I think the second one looks a lot better, from anatomy to texture to everything. :)

Regardless of any misguided arguments on morality *glances at some of the other commenters* - copying things (when done by hand, while looking at a reference - not tracing or anything) is a legitimate way to improve your own skill in art. In fact, the practice is used very commonly in all manner of art classes. Whether you choose to sit in the Louvre and copy the Mona Lisa, or reproduce a bit of modern movie art, or copy a vase on a table, is really irrelevant. You have shown a very marked improvement in accurately painting what you see. So I say, well done!

Dear haters.
This person gave credit to Dreamworks for their movie.
Please do not even say you have not drawn/thought of drawing fanart.
This is simply fan art and is very much improved, please don't hate on this person just because you have no interests and your life is called 'The Computer'.
Love.
The person who wishes to slap you.

You really don't know what are you talking about, while making yourself like a fool.

Also there is quite a difference between improving from scratch and just still continuing to use (official) artworks.

You're right, I tried to copy the art best I could. But I did it for my own practice, improvement, and entertainment...I wanted to see how much I could improve. And I didn't trace it -- I used a reference that was about 1/20th the size of the canvas.

She hasn't traced the official art, it's obvious by simply looking at her paintings, so I don't see what the problem is. And even if using official art as model isn't allowed (which I doubt because she even credited the original movie), that doesn't change the fact that she has improved.

On further investigation, the dragon, in the newest painting, looks like he is on drugs because of the different iris positions lmao

"She hasn't traced the official art"

If that isn't tracing/copying, I don't know what it is for you.

I did look at this image before saying she hasn't traced it.

I'm not sure if your second comment means you've changed your mind or something, but if you still have doubts, here's a gif: [link]

If you look at it, you can see all the differences between her art and the official one. The angle of the boy's head, his hand, his torso, everything is different from the official art. If she had traced it they would match perfectly. =/

That still falls into the (heavy) "copying" category, even if she messed up badly in several points (like the dragon's eyes in the '2012' pic). You are kinda using a piss poor argument.

It's very possible to mess up a trace/copy of someone else's work, especially if you have no knowledge of art fundementals, such as forms, anatomy, proportions, etc...

I'm not saying she didn't copy it. I'm saying she didn't trace over it. She didn't draw it by tracing over the lines of the original art. Copies and trace-over arts are two different things. The art is hers, and her art has improved. But she did steal the idea from the movie, so it is copyright infringement.

I'm sorry you feel that way...I personally think it's one of the best pieces I've painted, but of course there's always room for improvement. I'm working on my art skills best I can -- practice makes perfect!
You have a great gallery, and I especially like your photos.
